Seeing an improvement

I joined a gym for the first time in my life just over a month ago and it actually seems to be going really well. My current job involves a lot of walking between labs (some of which are separated far across campus) and I was totally fed up of getting home at night and being totally tired out and lethargic. The gym is hard going, especially as I started off so terrified and out of shape - I have never been a sporty person in my life. My main aim in PE lessons at school was to see how early I could be sent out the class to get changed and read a book/write lines or whatever. All the instructors at the gym seem really nice and it isn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be. Even though sometimes I feel like the pinkest, hottest, out of breath person there I figure lots of people started out this way and the only way to improve is to keep at it and not get discouraged.

I'm a bit knackered today as I had quite a hard session this morning but overall I noticed that even when I was covering up to several miles in a day just doing experiments in different labs on campus I was holding up pretty well and being more productive than I have been in a long time so it definitely seems to be worthwhile for me and I will be keeping up with it.

Safety and Sensibility

I twigged the other night one of the reasons Billy Talentless really annoys me. He has pretty much self appointed himself Health and Safety head of the lab group and has also got himself another H&S related role across the department. Like I think I said in an earlier post I think proper H&S precautions and attitudes in the lab are really important. Unfortunately Billy has taken on these roles not because he cares about best working practices and similar in the lab, but because he likes to make himself feel important by being able to antagonise people and tell them off. He always makes a big deal to me how he is going to give such-and-such a bollocking for not being safe in the lab and is always sending out a million emails that generally get automatically deleted by most of the lab group as he is very much seen as the Boy Who Cried Wolf. He is truely appalling at dealing with other people and I've never seen him modify his behaviour and attitude to fit a situation as ultimately it is all about him. Often in situations I think people respond better if you treat them like adults, have a quiet word with them rather than first off get the secretary to send out an email detailing the health and safety breach (generally only something very minor) and humiliate them in front of the entire lab group.
