Maths

I've been attempting do some serious analysis of my data recently and it's all going reasonably well. However I have realised I desperately need to brush up my maths skills if I am going to be able to do anything more with my data and analyse it properly. I have always been a real biochemist when it comes to data analysis. Stick everything in excel, print out a few graphs, do a few simple numerical manipulations until it looks right and use the odd specialist fitting package where all the theory part is done and it's just a case of pasting in the data and blindly accepting the output.

Anyhow an interesting chat with an ex-colleague has finally made me get off my bum and get to work on those maths skills. At the moment I have decided to spend 45 minutes every workday working through a maths for biochemists book. It's going much more slowly than I thought but I'm pleased I'm sticking with it. I think that this time I'm sticking with it as I really want to understand my data in more depth so need to develop the maths skills to do that, and also i have found a neat book especially for biochemists which is written in quite a chatty style which I find easier to relate to and also has really relevant examples. I shall try and chart my progress here and keep motivated.
