Seeing an improvement
I joined a gym for the first time in my life just over a month ago and it actually seems to be going really well. My current job involves a lot of walking between labs (some of which are separated far across campus) and I was totally fed up of getting home at night and being totally tired out and lethargic. The gym is hard going, especially as I started off so terrified and out of shape - I have never been a sporty person in my life. My main aim in PE lessons at school was to see how early I could be sent out the class to get changed and read a book/write lines or whatever. All the instructors at the gym seem really nice and it isn't nearly as intimidating as I thought it would be. Even though sometimes I feel like the pinkest, hottest, out of breath person there I figure lots of people started out this way and the only way to improve is to keep at it and not get discouraged.
I'm a bit knackered today as I had quite a hard session this morning but overall I noticed that even when I was covering up to several miles in a day just doing experiments in different labs on campus I was holding up pretty well and being more productive than I have been in a long time so it definitely seems to be worthwhile for me and I will be keeping up with it.

Good luck with the exercise - one of the good things about starting anything from a position of under-achievement or less than stellar prowess is that improvement should be fairly rapid as you get the hang of it. Enjoying it is most of the battle though - I'd really miss my cycle commute, and you just can't buy that level of being interested in something.
