Travel Broadens the Mind

Woo Hoo. Just got train tickets to visit my sister in Norwich (It's a fine city) and then home to London for Christmas and new year. They say travel broadens the mind although I'm not entirely sure I want my mind broadened Morden Stylee. I think one day I will post more about my home suburb of Morden. It is a special place. Hopefully my travels will give me something slightly more interesting to write about, I think I'm in line for the most pointless, aimless blog ever award at the moment. That was a long sentance, I should have paid more attention to my mother when I was at school, my grammar is appalling and my spelling gets worse and worse every day although I blame that on the crap American papers I read for work all the time. What is so difficult about including an e in haemoglobin. Hemoglobin is stupid and makes people mispronounce it. Signalling spelt with only one L is another thing that really annoys me. Grrrr.

Arse

I'm so tired and so bored. I know that it would be a good idea if I did some work especially as the bloke most able to help me with my current experiments will be away next week and I am already quite behind with stuff but I really can't be arsed. I have just been demonstrating all today and quite fancy a sit down with a big mug of hot chocolate and a trashy magazine. I have no idea how proper teachers cope, it's certainly something I could never do. Must. Do. Work Mind you 3.12pm does seem to be a bit late to be getting started doing anything new. I think I will end up doing my usual faffing about on the internet, try and get protocols and do work at the weekend then go shopping. The German Christmas market is now open and I hear the gluhwein calling. I think there was going to a point to this post when I started it but my brain has given up on me so I think I'll post again once my brain returns.

Goth

I have just had a top night out on Saturday at Wendy House, an 80s/Rock/Goth/Alternative club night at the university. It is one of my favourite club nights, it's an opportunity to get properly dressed up (or not), listen to lots of different music, jump around and dance like a loon or whatever. It's such a nice atmosphere and it's great for people watching when the music is poo.

New Shoes

I am very happy today as I am wearing my lovely new boots. They are dark chocolate brown, knee high suede with leather/suede flowers up the side. They are from Clarks and they are lovely. I would provide a link showing how lovely they are but the Clarks website is stupid and doesn't work on my computer.

Co workers

Now I quite enjoy the work that I do but I think I must be the most intolerant person in the world as I find most of my colleagues really annoying. He's a lovely chap but he annoys me. I get annoyed with the way he greets me. What's wrong with Hello, morning or alright? I always get 'ello, 'ello, 'ello or usually Boo. Boo. What sort of way is that to greet a person. Also I get annoyed in the fact that I think lots of the research he's doing is bollocks and it's so unfair that he's come into a totally new area of research with no prior knowledge and has been getting loads of results. I'm sure it must be wrong but he somehow manages to do enough to get people to believe his claims. Also he has quite an annoying voice that often goes squeeky. And he has quite bouffant hair. And he wears black stonewash jeans or chinos with smart shoes which just look wrong.

Arghhh!

Today I have been demonstrating essential techniques in biochemistry to second year undergrads. They are so annoying though. I try and help them but some of them are so fuckwitted it's unbelievable. The practical starts by telling all the students what they should do and how/when to do it. They then sit at their benches and look blank so I and all the other demonstrators go round to the individual groups and explain again. Then go around again and check they are doing something. It's so unbelievably tedious. And this goes on all day. And I have another month of this to do. I must have been very bad in a previous life.

Yay. My lovely supervisor says I can do a really cool post doc with him when I finish my PhD.

Something New Every Day

Today I went to a lecture about polarography although I'm not sure if I actually learnt anything

Buses always come in 3s

Why is it that stuff always happens in lumps? I spend ages waiting for a bus then lots turn up, I do no work for ages then suddenly get a years worth of results in a few months and it seems most people have lots of bad things happen to them consecutively. I have a lovely friend who is the nicest person I have ever known (truely, she is almost faultless) but is a walking book of painful and horrid medical complaints. I hate seeing people close to me upset or in pain as I feel so helpless, I never know what to say or do. People always think I'm a good listener but really it's because I'm hopeless at doing stuff (also I find it quite easy to tune out and start thinking of random stuff rather than what the person is saying)

Hmmm. I'm not sure what I'm saying here but this post was prompted by a visit from my friend who's mum is having a nervous breakdown (brought on by problems with existing medical conditions I think) and I have no idea what I can do to help make her feel better.

More things I like

Steam Trains - I think they're so much cooler than boring skanky electric trains that run on the railways now. I love the way they all look different and are so shiny and special looking. And the noise and whooshing of steam they make is also great. I'm also quite fond of traction engines but trains are bigger and better in my opinion.

Trashy Magazines - things like Chat and That's Life! are great full of totally random tips like wallpapering your garden shed with old seed packets, the best problem pages since Just Seventeen i.e. by boyfriend came in my eye during oral sex, will I go blind? and top chavtastic real life stories.

Lurgy

Bleugh. I have a cold. I have a sore throat, feel all achey and generally pants and have been abandoned by my boyfriend today. I think he should stay at home and look after me seeing as it was he who infected me with the lurgy in the first place.

Late

Ooops slept in very late today and didn't get to work until just after 11am. I did watch an interesting programme about mobile phones and their impact in the congo and how they can be recycled though. I love science and technology documentaries. At work now and I really should try and finish off my maths homework and do something constructive but I can't be arsed.

Something new every day

The collective noun for rhinos is "crash"

I like the idea of a crash of rhinos, it's almost as good as a gaggle of geese which I think is my favourite collective noun.

Yay. A new way to waste my time

Yay. Following in the spangalicious footsteps of the lovely luce28 and adara I have decided to join in the current trend of blogging. I'm quite techno stupid but so far everything seems to be working.

I will probably write more later as I'm meant to be doing maths coursework and have to do a course on endnote in a bit (yes my life is that dull and full of geeky science and academic stuff as I'm meant to be doing a PhD at the moment)
